Origin Story

Initially, this nurse said he wanted his poem to be about the perseverance and resilience of the family caregivers of patients with advanced cancer who he worked with. But he also reflected that "resilience" can only occur in the context of environmental support–and environmental constraints.

He noted that many of the people he worked with–mostly from communities underserved by the healthcare system–had to develop a new identity in the context of their caregiving responsibilities. "It's as if they need to become a new variant of themselves." Reframing and rethinking what this meant enabled them to draw strength. Working with these caregivers and hearing their stories gave him immense satisfaction: "This is work I hope to do my whole life."

I need

to tell myself

a new story

re-write my

character for

who I am now

as child / as spouse / as parent

I strain

my eyes

see something

beyond this

alien landscape

invaded by

massive machines

pulsating with

discordant beeps

I become

a variant

of myself

in a shrinking room

echoes

of hope

bounce off walls
