Dinner

Origin Story

She was a caregiver for the past two years of her husband, since his Stage IV cancer diagnosis, which she described as the hardest period of her life. This was significant as she had experienced much grief and loss in her life already, including the sudden death of her father, yet “grief with your partner sits heavier and harder.”

Through the challenge there was a lot of meaning she was making as well, being realistic and honest in her experience as they navigated the worst-case scenarios together. She shared about the many tensions and polarities to balance, like anger and gratitude, and darkness and brightness. Her values and perspective on life had changed as she considered ways to spend more time with her husband. For example, they carved out time for dinner, to intentionally put cancer aside and enjoy being present with each other, despite what might transpire in the timeline later.

Dinner

By Zina Mercil, Listener Poet

We sit in the center of time

just you and I,

leaving nothing unsaid.

Enjoying the privilege of this time

that is being taken away from us

The old couple walking,

that will never be us

It’s complex: sad and hopeful

and 10 years isn’t enough

How special you are,

the gift of my life.

Our future dinners may be uncertain

so right now

we sit in the center of time

just you and I,

leaving nothing unsaid.
