Origin Story

As she neared the completion of her education, this nursing student reflected on the next chapter of her life. She was planning to graduate in August and get married in October.

During this last phase of her degree, she had been pushing through burnout to submit assignments. The burnout had emerged after many years of schooling without any breaks, a path which she was nonetheless glad to have taken.

Between work, school, and family, she was incredibly busy. When I asked if she had any time for herself currently, she said absolutely not. But she would soon, and although she looked forward to it, she was in no hurry to get there.

horizon lightens with tomorrow’s
sunrise, even as today’s
sun has not set
yet
eyes up
to the new day,
I patiently wait
for this time of deadlines to fade away
for tomorrow, when everything will be the same
when everything will be different

He was a third year Neurology Resident whose passion was palpable as he shared that he had only fallen more in love with medicine over the past three years. Decision-making was a difficult part of his role, often in the grey.

Many of the people he worked with had to develop a new identity in the context of their caregiving responsibilities. “It’s as if they need to become a new variant of themselves.”

She believes that most of those who have connected with ACS began with a personal connection, but then, according to her, “you evolve, and you shift.”

Although at times she becomes discouraged about the inequalities in the world, she is determined to do her part by making sure everyone has access to quality healthcare.

He talked about recently speaking with a patient who experiences migraines: she is seeking the truth, he is seeking the truth to find a way to work with her, wanting to give more than a diagnosis and prognosis.

After a history of crippling endometriosis, this woman had an arduous, ongoing struggle with her healthcare community for the right to have a hysterectomy. She was finally granted approval at the age of 29. “It had been like pulling teeth, but finally I felt free,” she told me.
