I Am Stuck on a Wheel That Keeps Turning

Origin Story

This poemee wanted to share her experience as a surgical resident, offering insight into the traditions that define this unique culture: the relentless pressure to succeed, the deference to those in higher positions, and the often-cold interactions that accompany a field-wide drive for speed and efficiency.

To her, the surgical world has felt like “a wheel that keeps spinning,” a seemingly endless pursuit towards an undefinable goal. Her desire has been to excel within this world without losing herself in the process.

One source of inspiration has emerged from reading fantasy fiction, a genre full of stories with flawed characters who survive brutal systems, face their inner demons, and grow into something more. “They aren’t perfect, but they can learn and change course,” she said, a flicker of hope in her voice. I sense in her a quiet defiance – a belief that transformation is still possible, even in a world that seeks conformity.

I Am Stuck on a Wheel That Keeps Turning

By Leigh Finnegan-Hosey, Listener Poet

                I am
                  a surgeon.
      I cut. I suture. I close.
I walk tightropes
                   between brilliance and burnout --
  trying not to look down.

            I am stuck
      in a culture of deference
    and preference,
  where silence is reverence,
and the cost of precision
is more than I’m willing to pay.

I am stuck on a wheel
that forgets why it spins.
Round and round --
  not growing,
    just grinding.
      Not healing,
        just surviving.
          And praise feels like
               pressure in disguise.

I am stuck on a wheel that keeps turning
me into someone I hardly recognize.
But I can rewrite the rhythm --
find the force beneath
the friction.
I can
learn,
evolve,
chart a new course,
until each turning becomes
         my own revolution.
