Growth Phase

Origin Story

As a hospice doc, he thought about talking of death and dying. And then he thought about talking of the pandemic.

He ended up talking about his son, who is now his daughter. Another part of his experience of continual growth and soul-opening.

Growth Phase

By Mindy Shah, Listener Poet

While we were unfolding from pandemic

you were coming apart

at the seams,

joints expanding,

swiveling,

making a space

for your now-daughter to land.

The first thing you did

was to contract for safety--

if you ever want to hurt yourself--

love and fear

as the knee-jerk

but mostly love.

You grieved the loss

of a son,

looking at photos...

a trick of the light--

a trick of the mind--

maybe she was always there.

You grew onward,

putting a buck in a jar

for each time you said "him."

Shock, anger, surprise, worry.

Amazing, scary, depressing, learning.

You cry a bit less

with each telling.

New language on your tongue

as you learn the words

for love

and everything.
