The Beacon

“The Beacon” a poem by Geva Thole

“I’ve experienced a lot of big losses,” she said, referencing the passing of a grandfather and two uncles who did not survive their cancer diagnoses. “There were others too.”

But she also saw family members and volunteers survive. She shared that hope has kept her here and drives her work with her team, keeping them focused on the impact they’re making. “I want to be a beacon of hope and light,” she said, “keeping the flame lit for cancer prevention.”

The Beacon

Without darkness,

  there is no light.

     Without suffering,

        there is no hope.

           Without isolation,

               there is no outreach.

            Without weakness,

          there is no strength.

        Without loss,

       there is no urgency

         to treasure our time

           with aunts, uncles, grandfathers.

May I be a beacon of light,

                highlighting the path to survival.
