Certified Listener Poet,
Cohort 9 Fall 2024
Sibihan Lawrence is a London-born Performance poet, Certified Listener Poet, Theatre maker, Arts Education Specialist, Storyteller. And a dismantler of master-narratives. Approaching her 3rd year of a Theatre and Performance PhD at Goldsmiths University, her research interests lie in exploring Black British performance in relation to Black Socio-poetics of Being and Black Aliveness.
Through her work she examines the mythics of western Black identity construction within British postcolonial contexts. And utilises a range of Hip-hop aesthetics to explore ideas around cross-cultural adjacency, community engagement and healing.
Currently working on her latest collection of stories entitled: ‘Tales from My Mother’s Kitchen,’ she traverses Black postcolonial enclaves where she addresses the complexities of Black interiority. Black pain at the intersection with Black joy within cultural and communal shared spaces. The anthology juxtaposes both the beauty and precarity of Black British life, and is communicated through what she describes as ‘radical rhyme.’ The work attempts to illuminate the healing powers of Black British performance and storytelling, establishing them as recognised epistemes.
