In May 2026, LaShaune P. Johnson, PhD, had a poem published in The ADVANCE Journal. The mission of the journal is to provide a forum in which to publish peer-reviewed scholarship related to institutional transformation concerning inclusion, equity, and justice in higher education. They publish manuscripts that address systems of oppression, intersectionality, and strategies for resistance and change in all fields of inquiry, and especially in STEM-focused disciplines.
LaShaune's poem appears in response to a recent call asking for submissions reflecting on what it means to be a historically underrepresented scholar in academia. Her poem focuses on her experience as a Black first-generation college student-turned-professor at a college of medicine.
